UPDATED: Meeting and elections on Sat. Dec. 5th
There will be a regular meeting of the Maryland Masonic Research Society on Saturday, December 5th.
Our original speaker cancelled, so we have a change in the topic and speaker for this meeting.
Tarot and Freemasonry
by Michael Hughes
“Freemasonry and the Tarot” will explore the fascinating intersection of the Fraternity and the ancient deck of cards known as the Tarot. Originally used in continental Europe for playing games and gambling, a number of influential Freemasons latched onto the richly symbolic 78-card Tarot deck and promoted it as a reservoir of mystical and esoteric wisdom. Brother Hughes will show how the Tarot was transformed by well-known Freemasons, including Eliphas Levi, Kenneth Mackenzie, William Wynn Westcott, and Arthur Edward Waite, from a simple gambling game into a system of divination, spiritual insight, and magic that is utilized today by millions of people around the world.
Michael M. Hughes, current president of MMRS, discovered the Tarot when he received his first set of cards, the James Bond 007 Tarot Deck, at the age of ten. From that time on, he has been fascinated by the rich history and symbolism of the Tarot. He teaches classes and workshops on the history and use of the cards and has been a professional reader for over twenty years. His Tarot blog is: http://tarotbootcamp.com.
Our speaker will be Paul J. Rich, 32°, author, and President of Policy Studies Organization (Westphalia Press). Bro. Rich will discuss the topic of women and Masonry, including the institution of dames in pre-18th century lodges.
Our meeting will also include the election of officers for 2016.
