Regular Meeting and Installation of Officers – Saturday, December 1, 2018 (morning meeting)
Topic: Early History of French Speaking Lodges in Baltimore
There is an interesting history of French-speaking Lodges in Baltimore in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Using several documents from the Museum of the Grand Lodge of Maryland, this presentation illustrates and Illuminates masonic continuity overcoming adversity with the waxing and waning of Lodges using French as their working language in the 1794-1822 period. This can be at least partly attributed to the then prevailing political circumstances although other explanations should be sought. Some may see links between this historical background and current times.
Presenter: Jeffrey R. Kaplan
Jeffrey R. Kaplan was born in Geneva, Switzerland where he learnt French with a Genevese accent. After moving to Baltimore, he sought ways of maintaining his fluency and so joined Lodge Lafayette 89 in the Orient of Washington D.C. of the Grand Orient of France.
